Before arriving to camp, please review the following emergency action plans.

    • In the case of a tornado warning, guests should go to the shelter that is designated for their cabin or the one that is closest to them. A NLR Staff Member will let you know if there is a tornado warning and before NLR Staff take their safety position they are responsible for making sure all the guests are in the correct position, out of harm's way, and present.
    • Guest group leaders are to account for all their guests as they take shelter.
    • Be aware of the following definitions:
      • Tornado watch: is given when weather conditions are favorable to the formation of tornadoes.
      • Tornado warning: is given when a tornado funnel is sighted or radar indicated.
    • These areas at New Life Ranch - Frontier Cove are designated tornado shelters:

    • Groups can return to their scheduled activities once the Retreat Host and/or Facilities Staff have given the all clear.
    • If lightning or thunder is present, take cover inside!
    • Lifeguards will shut the waterfront and pool down when lightning strikes within 11 miles.
    • Keep away from open, high, and metal areas outside, ex: ballfield, pool, ropes, lake, etc.
    • The NLR Retreat Host will make announcements alerting guests to take cover inside of cabins, meeting areas, gameroom, gym, or Dining Hall.
    • If stuck outside, squat with your weight on your toes (not under a tree).
    • After NLR staff receive the “all clear” notification from WeatherSentry, NLR staff will make an “all clear” announcement..
    • Be smart with your life and your guests’ lives.
    • In instances of heavy rain, find shelter.
    • NLR Retreat Staff will communicate to guests to stay away from the lake.  The water can rise very fast and debris will begin making its way downstream.
    • No canoeing or swimming—the water is even more dangerous than you think.
    • After determining that a person is missing, designate an NLR staff or adult group leader to remain in the area where the person was last seen.  One or two adults should remain with other campers.
    • The Group Leader and NLR Retreat Host should be notified immediately.  They will then form a search party composed of teams of two adults each. Starting from the spot where the missing person was last seen, staff will begin a thorough search of the area.
    • After the initial search of all buildings and camp area, only the NLR Retreat staff may call 911 or local emergency services.  During this, the search should continue.
    • Take cover immediately.  Hail size can grow quickly.
    • Stay away from windows once inside.
